Shortly after his marriage, Elijah, accompanied by his wife and
brother-in-law, John O'Bannon, left Fauquier Co., VA and went to
Woodford Co., KY. They erected the first distillery in the State of
Kentucky and their partnership continued for several years until
Elijah bought a large tract of land on Glenn's Creek, when the
partnership was dissolved. Elijah erected another distillery on this
property and continued to operate it until he was succeeded by his
son, Oscar, who continued to manufacture whiskey until about 1865.
The brands "Old Pepper" and "Old Crow" had grown very popular and made
a fortune for the Peppers.
Elijah and his wife had a large family which they raised in
Woodford County.

In March 1924, Dr. Pepper moved his family to Jackson, MS, where
business would be better. Lena's father, William Carl Dittman, lived
with them. About 1927 Theodore Carl "Tate" Dittman, her brother,
moved to Jackson to live with them and help with their small dairy.
In 1939, the Peppers moved back to Pickens, where they bought a
house and 47 acres of land. The house was known as "The Grove" and
was built by Col. J.F. Tye in 1873. They continued to run their dairy
for several years. In the late 1940's, Lena sold land to build the
Pickens Baptist Church, and also sold other lots.
Dr. Pepper practiced his profession until about 1956, when he had
to retire because of illness.
After the death of the Peppers, the house was sold and later torn
down.

Rackley Loop, Pontotoc, MS 38863, provided most of this Anderson
family information. Some of it was compiled from census records, but
much of it was from gravestones in cemeteries in Pontotoc County, MS.
She gives credit to the late Mrs. Juanita Anderson Gillespie of
West Memphis, AR for providing some of the old newspaper clippings
that give interesting material about the family.
