Jackson, MS, 27 Mar 1993, by Charlotte Graham: "Place clay in front of him, give him the sound of ethnic music and Mississippi College professor Sam Gore can sculpt a human face in 10 minutes. Gore a professor at the college for 41 years, uses the technique to create a three-face sculpture he calls "God's Family of Man." "I play Oriental music for 10 minutes and do the face of an Oriental," explained Gore. "I play African music and create the face of a black man. I then play European music and create the face of a Caucasian. "I spend 10 minutes on each face, and then I play Christian music and open the eyes of the faces," said Gore. "What I'm trying to do is show that the only unity one can have is in Christ." . . . "The biblical reference to the church and the body of Christ affirms our personal roles as member or part of the body with equal importance," said Gore. "When the Lord said, 'Go ye into the world and preach the good news to all the earth,' He wasn't speaking to preachers alone. "He didn't say, 'You preachers do this, and you artists just play it cool,'" said Gore. "He wants artists to spread the good news, too." Gore said God endows everyone with a special gift. For him, the gift was art. "I didn't have any formal training until I was 19 years old," Gore said. "When I was younger I used to dig clay out of the ground and tried to make things." Gore's father, who majored in history, talked to him a lot about how Indians made pots. "I tried my hand at making pots and fell in love with it." "I also love sharing my love of art with others," he said. In May, Gore will end his tenure as head of the art department. He will give the administrative job to art professor Ruth Glaze, but continue his work with the students. "I will be here as long as they will have me and as long as they think I can do some good," he said. . . . Gore said he always enjoys God's handiwork. "All of God's creation is a work of art," he said. "My inspiration as a Christian artist is in God's awesome display of creative work, which emerged from infinite nothingness and is the primary source of beauty and the orchestration of the powerful and almighty," said Gore. "I am committed to an art concept of beauty and order derived from nature, which may be considered songs of adoration and praise, and those with a purposeful intent to communicate allegorically or symbolically a good news Christian message," he added. "I am successful to the extent that the message is not obscured, but enhanced by skill, style and technique."
