Came to America in 1619 on "Bona Nova" (Hotten), but must have returned to England and then back in 1635 with his family (Greer). Thomas Gascoyne brought with him Elizabeth, Josias, Mary and Alice Gascoyne, and a cousin named John Gambling. He settled permantly in the neighborhood of Hewlett's Point, Northumberland Co., VA. Elizabeth named above, was probably his wife, but at his death his wife was Sarah, and two other children John and Henry are named in his will. "The British Encyclopedia" and "Chambers' Encyclopedia for the Gascoynes in England" state that the Gascoynes are a Noble Norman family, early seated in Yorkshire, England. The head of the family was Sir William Gascoyne, Lord Chief Justice of England under Henry IV, who was born at Gaythorpe, Yorkshire in 1350 and died in 1415. The family had been of note in more ways than one in the life of the British Nation. George Gascoyne, son of Sir John Gascoyne, was probably the most noted of the English poets in the time of Queen Elizabeth. William Gascoyne of Yorkshire invented, before he was twenty years of age, a micrometer, one of the most useful of devices used in connection with the telescope. He fell in battle at Marston Moor in 1644, at the early age of twenty-four, one of the most talented men of his day in England.
