STUBBLEFIELD

Our records for the Stubblefield family began with William Henry Stubblefield, who is buried in Yazoo County, MS. His gravestone shows that he was born in Oglethorpe County, GA, but at the time of his birth, the area was still Wilkes County. Most of these records were collected by William Henry McRaven. (His research papers are stored in the Tennessee Archives in Nashville.)

Over the past thirty years, additional material has been added to the family records. A few years ago, a researcher found the marriage record of a William Stubblefield in Caswell County, NC. This was connected to our William Henry through William's will in Oglethorpe County, GA.

Research has been unsuccessful in finding ancestors of William. More research will be needed, but with the many advances being made with electronic data, we are ever hopeful that some of the families can be connected. Most of the family researchers believe our Stubblefield family descends from those early settlers in Spotsylvania County, GA. A number of these researchers are exchanging information electronically.

The Stubblefield family in Yazoo County, MS had large land holdings, a portion of which is still owned by present generations. Black Jack Baptist Church was one of the earliest churches in Eastern Yazoo County and was established on land given by the Stubblefield family.

A number of Stubblefields held the office of Sheriff of Yazoo County. It may be of interest to family members to know that the majority of deaths in the family in this county were caused by cancer.
