Her obituary in The Yazoo Herald, May 10, 1995 was as follows: "Funeral services for Evie Louise Pepper, 95, of Yazoo City were held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 8, from the chapel of Stricklin-King Funeral Home with the Revs. James Reed and Frank Wheat officiating. (Rev. Wheat had no part in the services, but Rev. B.H. "Skipper" Maxwell, a former pastor, had a major part, including the singing of two of her favorite hymns.) Burial followed at Glenwood Cemetery under the direction of Stricklin-King Funeral Home. (She was buried beside her husband, Jack Horton Pepper.) Mrs. Pepper died of heart failure May 5 at Mississippi Methodist Medical Center in Jackson. (After suffering a major stroke in her home at 513 East Broadway, Yazoo City, MS on April 27, 1995, from which she never regained consciousness.) Born Sept. 24, 1899 in Natchez, she was the daughter of John Wilson McRaven and Lorena "Lula" Stubblefield McRaven. She moved to Yazoo City as a young girl and graduated from high school here. She was a widely-known authority on birds and author and illustrator of a book, "Birds in Mississippi." She spoke to many groups showing slides of birds she had taken over a period of more than 50 years. Mrs. Pepper was also active in the Garden Club, DAR and the Audubon Society, plus she was a prize-winning photographer. Many people knew her best for her love of fishing. Until the early 1960s she was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she was married and taught Sunday School. Thereafter, she was an active member in the Independent Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack H. Pepper. Survivors include a son, Jack W. Pepper, Jackson; three daughters, Frances Coram, Blanchard, LA; Lorena Edlen, Chaparral, NM; Margaret Granthan, Oxford; a sister W.H. Saxton (Annette McRaven Saxton), Batesville; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Pallbearers were Al Jennings, David Edlen, James McMichael, Jack Pepper, Ray McCormack, Gilbert Ayala."
