Census of 1800, Mecklenburg Co., Hillsborough Dist., NC lists James McRaven, Jr. as head of household, with no children. Published sources show that James McRaven, Jr. and his family moved to Tennessee about 1808 with two Henderson families (William and John) and settled in Giles Co., about 75 miles south of Nashville. There are numerous references to James McRaven in the Giles Co. court records, showing that he acquired several tracts of land in that county, and that he was a member of numerous committees and juries. He was also an administrator of an estate there in 1811. The final reference to James McRaven in the Giles Co. court records states that he "came into open court in August 1824 and resigned his commission as Constable in Captain Nance's Company." It was about this time that James and his family of four sons and four daughters moved to Hinds Co., Mississippi, where James and his sons acquired tracts of the former Choctaw lands near Clinton and where they lived the remainder of their lives.

He and brother James were in general merchantile business during the 1850s. He continued to live in Clinton during and after the Civil War. His service in the Confederate Army suring the latter part of the war is somewhat obscure, but it is believed it was in some capacity of handling cotton for the Confederates. He served as sheriff of Rankin County, MS for a time, presumably in the early 1850s, and was Treasurer of Hinds County, MS from 1904 to 1908. After the death of his second wife, Almira Louise Duncan in December 1870, he lived with his several children, and died at the home of his daughter, Lucy, in Jackson where he is interred in Greenwood Cemetery beside the grave of his second wife.

He served 12 years as the second sheriff of Hinds Co., Mississippi. He was sergeant-at-arms during the colorful inauguration ceremonies of Governor Charles Lynch on January 8, 1836. He was also a planter near Clinton and a director and stockholder in the Real Estate Banking and Trust Company in Clinton. He is buried beside his father in the McRaven lot in the cemetery at Clinton.
