Before he was twelve years old, his parents migrated from SC to Lawrence Co., MS. Tradition has it that they spent a year in TN enroute. His aunt Mary who married Eli Garner, and her family also went to Lawrence Co. Eli's father died in Warren Co., TN in 1814, so it is logical that the families had spent time in that county. In about 1833, Zedekiah took his family to Yazoo Co., MS, where he spent rest of his lifetime. Apparently, they accompanied his father-in-law, James Hogan Bull, and his family. He was the only member of his family to come to Yazoo Co., several of his brothers went to Arkansas. He acquired about 2,600 acres of land prior to the Civil War, but by 1870 most of the property was owned by his many descendants. An ownership map for that year, shows that his children were all located in the Deasonville area, Zedekiah still had about 400 acres. The following is extracted from an article published in the "Yazoo Sentinel," dated 29 Jan 1880: "In 1835, almost half a century now, there settled near Deasonville a South Carolinian, his wife and three litle boys. His name was Z. Pepper. Dating from him and descending from him, there is now gathered around the sire, (for he still lives, bearing gracefully his silver locks and four score and more years,) some four generations, numbering in all fully one hundred and twenty souls, "and they are all within sound of a dinner horn," remarked Mr. Bruce Pepper one of the second generation. Of this family, it can be said that they are almost without an exception, a race of industrious, well to do, moral, intelligent citizens, one and all of the men having hewn their own way by self- exertion and self confidence alone. Of this large family, but one has ever strayed from the haunts and scenes of the general home, and that one was a rising young merchant at Dallas, Texas, where he met with an early death, a year or two ago. He was of the third generation of this family. Of this family there are among the young men, just grown, two sons of Mr. E. Pepper. This past year, with the aid of three or four half grown negroe boys, they cultivated their father's place, and as the result of a hard year's work, they made, one, twenty- nine bales of cotton and all the corn he needs for the present year, and the other, twenty-five bales and an equal amount of corn. They have each married in past few weeks and have launched their barques. It is a most worthy family, respected and esteemed, and the men, one and all, upon reaching manhood speedily settled into homes that are made profitable." The old house has been gone for many years, and the property is now (1993) owned by Mrs. Betty Crystal. The cemetery was placed on the Abandoned Cemetery List of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History and is elibible for upkeep by the county. With the valuable assistance of Mrs. Crystal, the cemetery his been restored. Roy Pepper, Jr., at his own expense is installing an iron fence around the plot. A family organization has been established, with trustees, to see that this cemetery is maintained in the current condition.
